Year B Proper 15: the bread of life
“How can this man give us his flesh to eat on the moon?” they demanded to know, adding, “This is getting a little ridiculous.”
So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” Continue reading
My Jairus moment
The “problem” with finishing a sermon on Friday night is that it leaves far too much room for reflection, inspiration, and downright interference by the Holy Spirit. Here is the version of the sermon I preached Saturday night at St … Continue reading

Year B Proper 8: Jairus, Jesus, gay marriage, and grace
This is an updated and expanded version of a sermon that appeared in an earlier draft form, and replaces that post. A few short weeks ago, was Jairus among those religious leaders who thought Jesus mad, even demon-possessed, coming out … Continue reading

Year B Proper 5: bike racks and blasphemy
I have a bit of an independent streak, so the other day when the car dealership called to say that the car was fixed, I didn’t want to have to wait for someone else to take me over there to … Continue reading

Year B Easter 5: abide with me
I can’t help but think that to judge God’s will by the outcome of our prayers that way is a pretty dangerous sort of reverse-engineering. Continue reading
Year B Easter 2: that our joy may be complete
These fifty days of Easter are a strange and troubling time, when the risen Christ walks abroad, taking his disciples by surprise on the road, by the water, behind closed doors, murmuring of Peace. They are days when the signs of God are all around us, the signs of resurrection, calling us into the good news that the kingdom of God has drawn near. Continue reading

Year B Lent 4: snakes alive
There comes a time, Jesus tells Nicodemus, to look up, and to trust God, even though you know there are snakes snapping at your ankles, even though you know there is more work to do, more wilderness to slog through, more sin to solve, more than you can shake a stick at; there comes a time to look up and to trust God, even though what you see looking back is the serpent that bit you; even though what you see is the Son of Man crucified, dying on a cross. For God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Continue reading

Year B Lent 3: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast
There’s something unusual about the way that John’s gospel tells the story of the cleansing of the temple. Each of the four gospels tells some version of this event, and they are, for biblical accounts, surprisingly close in detail to … Continue reading

Year B Lent 2: putting a spin on the gospel
One of the good things to come out of the trials and tribulations of Brian Williams and Bill O’Reilly, in hot water over the accuracy of their memories of reporting from dangerous places, accused of polishing their credentials, of burnishing … Continue reading
