War

I want to write about

the unbearable irony of dry breasts

in a land of milk and honey,

the bitter taste of hunger among the olive groves,

but I am not qualified. Instead, I will contemplate

the crumpled faces of the women

of Jerusalem when Jesus told them, Blessed

are the bodies that never bore fruit,

and the breasts that never nursed,

while all around them pomegranates bled

in sympathy for the devastating irony

of humanity.
