The manager suspected
that his boss might be a good man,
God help us, he muttered,
manipulating money into
open palms and curling fingers alike.
Sunset played the devil with his eyes,
garbling the complaints of weary
and incandescent workers,
while those who left first,
looking back, saw him haloed
as though with living fire.
