Fear of falling

The lectionary lessons for today are about Adam and Eve, the fall, temptation, redemption, resistance …

The devil dared him to be fearless.
The devil dared him to be brazen,
in God’s face;
a son so independent in his own mind,
he would forget who taught him
to fear gravity,
to respect the rules that govern
cause and effect,
who set the spheres in motion.
Do not be afraid, he said;
but his trembling, twitching tail
belied his own fear of falling.
